PSG were crowned as Ligue 1 champions on Thursday even though 2019-20 season was called off, as per reports.
The champions had a game in hand with 12-points lead on the table. The gap they had created between themselves and Marseille was considered nearly unconquerable under normal conditions.
Earlier this week, the French government put a ban on all sporting events until September due to the pandemic. This put a major blow on the Les Parisiens hopes for the title.
However, the French Football Association decided to hand them the Ligue 1 title on the basis of points-per-game. This would allow the Ligue 1 standings table for season 2019-20 to remain as it was when the games were stopped after 8th March.
Each team in the table had played 28 games except from PSG and Strasbourg, both with one game in hand. Applying the points-per-game ratio to their remaining match would only move them up a single spot, putting them on 10th position in the table.
Other than that, Marseille and Rennes qualify for the UEFA Champions League for next season. While Lille and Reims have saved themselves a spot in the Europe League.
