Ligue 1 is a French professional league for association football clubs. It is consisted by 20 clubs. Ligue 1 was launched in 1932 with the name National before converting to Division 1 after a year of its launch. The name Division 1 changed to current name in 2002. The league usually played from August to May, each club plays with other twice, once at home and once away, total of 38 matches played by each team. Saint-Etienne is the most successful club of the league with 10 titles. Marseille is at 2nd with 9 titles and Nantes & Monaco both with 8 titles. Lyon won the 7 consecutive seasons. PSG played 45 most consecutive seasons in the league from 1974 to uptil.
Top three teams of the competition qualify for the UEFA Champions League. Fourth placed team qualifies for UEFA Europa League. Bottom three teams of the competition relegated to Ligue 2.
Ligue 1 season starts from August and ends in May with each team playing each other twice, once at their home stadium and once at opponents. Each team plays a total of 38 matches.
Points
Three points are awarded to team for a win, one point for draw and none for a loss. The teams are ranked by their total points accumulated, head-to-head match results, wins, goal differences and goals scored. Team with the highest number of points at the end of the season wins the competition.
